The Flexographic Technical Association of South Africa recently conducted its annual Print Excellence Awards competition. The contest evaluated label and packaging applications from various market segments, all produced on different substrates and with different technologies. Judges heavily scrutinized entries from the region, and those selected exemplify true craftsmanship and superior quality.

SARepco Pty Ltd, Mark Andy’s long-standing distributor in South Africa, was a big supporter of the Print Excellence Awards, and had a handful of customers enter into this year’s competition. Of their submissions, 7 printed on Mark Andy OEM technology placed Gold, Silver or Bronze. Another 3 applications by SARepco partners received honorable mentions in the competition recap as joint finalists.

Maintaining sponsorship and involvement within the trade organization, SARepco is supporting the future of the flexo print industry in South Africa, which is growing rapidly year over year. That being said, below are some of the notable Print Excellence entries that placed utilizing Mark Andy technology. Enjoy!

Winning applications from the 2017 FTA-SA Print Excellence Awards

SA Greetings Family Gift Wrap- Silver
SA Labels produced this gift wrap on an industry favorite, the Mark Andy 2200. The plates, known to be critical to print quality, were produced in house and were part of the DuPont Cyrel product line. Judges were impressed by the solid ink laydown, as well as the clear reverse type. It was so fine in fact that the group had a hard time believing it was printed flexographically!

SA Greetings Family Gift Wrap- Gold
Another application by SA Labels, based out of Westmead, South Africa clenched an award this year. Also gift wrap produced on a Mark Andy 2200, this application exemplified excellent registration and uniform plate pressure. This in turn supported smooth gradients and incredibly fine highlight dots. The job was printed utilizing water-based inks from Flint Group.

Comfort Morning Fresh Fabric Softener 400ml- Silver
First Impression Labels’ Performance Series P7 produced Comfort Morning’s silver award winning fabric softener shrink job. Plates were supplied by DuPont and ink was supplied by Flint Group. The gradation of the output “wowed” the judges, who were impressed by the fine 1% minimum dot. The P7 provides benefits outside the printed results as well. The platform’s design supports operator efficiency, with ergonomically integrated print controls and a fully automated job register.

Dulux Membrane- Gold
The Mark Andy 2200 and expert in-house platemaking secures another win for SA Labels through the Dulux Membrane coated paper product line. Like the other recognized applications, tough to capture gradients, solids, and fine highlight dots are achieved with high quality. Multicolored registration makes this a difficult application and is well handled by the flexo press.

Medal Paints Waterproofing Membrane Printer- Bronze
Another winner in the coated paper product category was printed using tried-and-true Mark Andy technology. SA Labels used their 2200 in conjunction with DuPont plates and Flint Group ink to achieve crisp reversed-out type and expert registration.
